I had a wonderful conversation with a good friend of mine, Brett Starr on his experience with music and music education. Brett Starr has lived in London, Ontario since he was about 8 years of age, is now 19 years old and is currently studying Police Foundations at Fanshawe College. Throughout my interview, i asked Brett questions about his aspirations in music, how music has effected his life, ways in which he uses music in his everyday life, and how his experience with music education impacted him as either a musician or simply a listener of music.
Brett listens to music everyday, and seldom finds himself not listening to music. up until recently, Brett has had no experience playing an instrument, however he was recently given an electric keyboard for Christmas which prompted him to begin self taught piano training which he maintains at his own pace to this day. He would love to pursue a career in music, specifically the hip hop stream, however he claims it is easier said than done, and that the chances of failure is very high, and thus he's chosen a more 'practical' route for a career but will keep music as a hobby. Brett finds that music is very useful to help with concentration while he studies, as well as easing anxieties and sometimes providing an outlet of expression for certain emotions or feelings depending on the situation. When discussing with someone whom has such a bond with music, it upset me when i asked him about how or if music education inspired or influenced his liking towards music in anyway; he said no. Though admitting to a lack of attention and effort put into the music course, Brett felt that the teacher was unsuccessful in introducing him to the magnificent wonders of music education, as well as lacked making the connection between the students and the music, and the students music and the class, which I feel is an extremely important piece of pedagogy when attempting to engage students in music. you must play the music they like if you want them to like the music, then you can open their eyes to the things they like in their preferred music found in other genres and works such as classical. If Brett could do it all over again, he would have paid closer attention in his music classes, but also wishes that the teacher placed more emphasis on "how cool music is" and how much it is able to do for those who are playing and those who are listening. If you would like to know exactly what Brett said, or would take delight in laughing at the cringe level of awkwardness found in my voice and delivery of this interview, I have attached the audio recording. Thank you for reading, now you know a little more about Brett Starr. brett_starr_on_music__1_.m4a
